It
is believed that there has been a mill on this site since the
15th century. The first known recording was in 1684. The property
was purchased by a local landowner Viscount Richard Bulkeley
and major renovations were undertaken including the fitting
of new French burr mill stones, which produced a fine grain
flour suitable for bread making. These mill stones were shipped
to Tal-y-Cafn, from where they were hauled by 20 of the Viscount's
tenants with ox teams, apparently receiving no pay, but rewarded
with a meal at the Viscount's expense.
An oak beam is still in evidence with the engraving "R.
B. 1689" which is presumably to commemorate the completion
of the work
The Bulkeley family sold the mill in 1889 at public auction,
being described as "a good working mill with excellent
water power and land attached".
I t is not known when the mill ceased working - though, it was
probably in the early 1900's, at which time the internal machinery
was removed.
